Jacob Minors, who was of black and Native American ancestry, was a prominent pilot from St. David’s. According to St. David’s Island folklore, he was a descendant of a family of five Pequot Indians whose canoe drifted off the coast of North America. They were picked up by a ship brought to Bermuda as slaves.
Guiding ships through Bermuda’s treacherous reefs required great skill and the pilots such as Mr. Minors who carried out this dangerous work were highly respected.
Jacob Minors died at the age of 84 and was held in high esteem in St. David’s and by the Bermuda community as a whole.
