Teacher and Girl Guide leader Julia Lightbourn earned a well-deserved reputation as a stalwart in her community.
The daughter of James and Jane Lightbourn, she attended The Berkeley Institute and Excelsior Secondary School. She obtained a B.Sc. degree from Wilberforce University in Ohio, and spent her first years of her career teaching at Spring Hill School. When Spring Hill amalgamated with Paget Glebe to become Ord Road School, she joined the staff and became Head of the Kindergarten Department.
For many years, Lightbourn was leader of First Heron Bay Girl Guide Company. She remained active with the Bermuda Girl Guide Association after stepping down as leader in 1960. Younger leaders frequently sought her out for her knowledge and expertise. In 1966, the Bermuda Girl Guide Association presented her with the Oak Leaf Award for her services.
Lightbourn was a member of St. Mary’s Church, Household of Ruth Lodge as well as a founding member of the Socratic Literary Club and the Hibiscus Garden Club.
