Susan Lamb

Self-taught St. David’s Island Nurse/Midwife

1874 - 1959

Susan Lamb served the St. David’s community for many years as a nurse and midwife. Born in Tucker’s Town, she  became a part of the St. David’s community upon her marriage to Benjamin “Red Benny” Lamb.

She had no formal training, but her services were especially important before 1934, when Severn Bridge, which connected St. David’s to the mainland, was built.

She was the mother of 10 children and would take one of them along to assist when called out at night.
